The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in stress levels in children in a special care unit when their parents were in direct skin-to-skin contact with the infants on one side of the bed or when the parents were in skin-to-mattress contact with the infants on the other side of the bed. There was a significant reduction in the serum cortisol levels in all groups (skin-to-skin, skin-to-mattress and routine) when compared with values obtained in the same children 2 weeks before admission to the special care unit. The cortisol levels in the skin-to-mattress group returned to baseline values at 6 weeks. It is concluded that skin-to-skin contact or skin-to-mattress contact in a special care unit does not affect the cortisol levels of the children but may have a positive effect on the parents' level of distress.Q:
